Instead, they should create opportunities for their donors to mature as generous individuals whose gifts are an expression of gratitude for what they have received in life.

Our conversation was not about the $125 Giving Tuesday donor or the late-in-life individual giving seven-figure gifts; rather, we focused on the affluent, income-based, forty-five year old who has no interest in being treated like a consumer and simply wants to learn how to be more generous toward a cause they care about. As David accurately pointed out, this donor expects us to arrive with open-ended questions that we don’t already have an answer for and to focus on developing their inclination before we concern ourselves with their capacity.
