210 | Is now the time to drop the fundraising formulas and experiment with something new?

Here’s my first prediction for fundraising trends in the new year. 2020 has proven that even the most enduring fundraising formulas are no match for the complex and unpredictable world in which we live; 2021 will be the year that some of us drop the formulas and experiment with some new ideas.

I am well aware of the endless flow of gurus in your inbox insisting that they have a handle on the one best way to ensure your success in the new year. Unfortunately, they and their pseudo-scientific techniques are never any better than the rest of us at predicting the future. I’m betting that many of the proven formulas that have consistently delivered efficiency, predictability, and control are on the chopping block in 2021. I say go with your gut and try something new.

This is what Sami and I talked about today - let's drop the formulas. Sami works at Miami University where she is responsible for creating highly-customized stewardship strategies with a portfolio of 150+ donors. And, she insists it’s not all that complicated; it just requires a heavy dose of creativity, some flexibility, and a knack for delivering results.
