#161 | Should someone’s past prohibit them from participating in philanthropy?

Today's panel conversation is the second in a two-part discussion about rejecting gifts. We have chosen the recent decision by Share Our Strength to reject a donation from rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine as our case study. We want to thank Lisa Baxter, Jason Briggs, Sam Laprade, and Cherian Koshy for being a part of this discussion.

Among the questions that were asked today, it was perhaps the question of whether someone's past should prohibit them from participating in philanthropy that surfaced the most for this group. They also considered whether nonprofits are creating gift acceptance policies or, in fact, donor acceptance policies? I also raised the question of whether some of these problems could be related to the volume of gifts that many nonprofits receive.

As I mentioned during the introduction, we would like to invite all our listeners to discover how the four frameworks can help your organization create an environment where fundraising can thrive. Based on insights drawn from behavioral economics, complexity science, and cognitive psychology, these four planning models offer a more holistic and human-centered perspective of fundraising rather than the reductionist and mechanical approach that originated from public relations and marketing.
