206 | What important lessons do two decades in fundraising have to offer?

In the last couple of years, Jack has become a good friend and professional confidant. Having navigated very similar career paths, the two of us share many of the same aspirations for improving the path that our younger colleagues must traverse. Given the time, we could spend hours comparing notes on what two decades in fundraising has taught us about ourselves and our communities. We would certainly banter around explanations for the naive idealism that is commonplace among fundraisers and perhaps conjure up all sorts of theories for why ours is a profession that can’t quite seem to get itself beyond its messy adolescence.

I’m extremely excited about Jack’s new book, Tales from the Trenches: What I Learned from 25 Years in Fundraising, which is now available on Amazon. Among the lessons he shares, Jack addresses several of the infamous myths that inevitably get in our way. For example, Jack argues that we’ve got to make sure special events are given their appropriate place and that we not develop unreasonable expectations of what they can be counted on to consistently accomplish.
